Let's take a dive into all the details we know about the upcoming Ford F-150 electric pickup truck. Its launch is reportedly only some 2 years away and here's what else we know about the electric truck from Ford.

***UPDATE 4: Ford Now says that the F-150 electric truck will enter production in the first quarter of 2022, which means it's coming a bit earlier than previously expected. Additionally, a battery technology dispute ended badly for SK Innovation, the supplier of batteries for the F-150, but the truck will soldier on with SK as the supplier for at least the next 4 years.

***UPDATE 3: Ford has just announced that the F-150 electric pickup truck will be the most powerful F-150 ever and that it will feature a giant frunk, dual motors and be the most capable Ford truck to date. It will go on sale in mid-2022.

***UPDATE 2: Ford has revealed the all-new F-150 and its styling both inside and out, as well as most of its features, will surely be found on the electric version of the truck. We've highlighted many of those details here.

***UPDATE: Ford has now made it known that this truck will not launch until 2022. See new details here.

Debut

The electric Ford F-150 Lightning debuts May 19 at 9:30 Eastern. The truck will allegedly be the Blue Oval's follow-up EV to launching its upcoming electric crossover with Mustang-inspired styling. Known as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the electric SUV will kick off Ford's wholehearted approach to make extremely compelling electric vehicles.

Word is that it's being fast-tracked for production with a launch set for mid-2022. You can see our list of all of the upcoming electric pickup trucks for 2021 and beyond.

Appearance

Ford officially confirmed plans to build a fully electric F-150 at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. Spy shots have shown a test mule under development in Michigan. It looked mostly the same as the existing truck, except for a place to plug in and a slightly higher ride height for fitting the batteries underneath the cab. These vehicles are allegedly very early prototypes, though. Additionally, we saw video of the million-pound tow, which shows the Ford F-150 electric in detail. Ford notes that the F-150 will have a giant frunk too.

However, it wasn't until the reveal of the all-new F-150 that we got our clearest look yet as to what the Ford F-150 EV will look like. We've done our best to render it into view in the image below:

Capability

The biggest hint about the electric F-150's future came in July when the company released a video of the truck towing over one million pounds of train cars. The company refused to offer details about what powered the pickup, though. This towing claim came under some scrutiny though.

We expect the truck to be AWD and it'll surely be the quickest F-150, as confirmed by Ford. Electric motors can crank out a ton of power at basically zero RPM, so the electric Ford truck should be fast off the line. We don't know the power figures for the electric F-150, but we assume the numbers will be similar to the metrics released for the Rivian R1T. The F-150 electric truck will come with dual motors.

Range

This remains a complete mystery at this point in time, but anything less than 300 miles would be a disappointment. We fully expect the electric F-150 to top 300 miles with ease and believe it will offer more range than the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV (range details here).

Price

This is the biggest unknown. Surely a pickup truck is expensive and the electric version of the F-150 will be no exception to this rule. We expect a sub $100,000 starting price, but this is simply just a guess at this point in time. We don't expect the F-150 EV to come close to matching the $40,000 base price of the Tesla Cybertruck though.

Closing

An updated F-150 is now here for the 2021 model year and the EV variant would likely wear its revised styling, perhaps with a few tweaks here and there.

We'll update this Everything We Know post as more information on the electric F-150 becomes available.
